Most Romanians don't get the American thing for classic cars, most won't drive a Trabant no matter how cool it is... I love the Trabant. I think I paid around $100 for it, in good condition. There's a big Trabant revival going on in most of Europe, Germany, Hungary and Poland especially. The reason you don't see too many pimped out Trabbis in RO is that when you take it for the inspection ALL of the serial numbers have to match (so no new motor for your Trabbi, although a 4 cylinder Tico motor will bolt up just fine to the tranny), the color has to match the color on the registration, to change it is a MAJOR hassle (forms, stamps, you know the drill) and everything has to be within factory specs for that specific vehicle. Chop the top? Make it a convertible? Only if you are willing to pay an engineer to state to do a study to find out if it's still structurally sound, etc. A friend of mine made some mods to the engine in his Trabant and had to include a hood scoop. When he took it for the inspection, they wouldn't give him a stamp because his car "had a hole in the hood." Anyway, I think you are back in the US now. Buy a Trabbi and have it shipped over. Because of its age, it is usually exempt emissions testing in the US. Liked the Trabbi so much I named my bar after it.
