I took that photo on 2 Oct 2004 which, as I recall, was oppressively hot... and I could not figure out why "these Romanians" (as such) were wearing coats and jackets in the sweltering heat. I managed to get the photo without disrupting the mood by using a ~450mm equivalent lens and positioning myself rather non-chalantly. There are a lot of chess games happening every weekend at the park near my apartment and I've been mulling over the opportunities to both photograph the games up close as well as interview the players. They've all got a story to tell. Interestingly, I learned that chess comes from India. From what I gather, it later spread to Persia which named the game Shah (after their word for king/ruler). And, in Romania, the game is still called Şah because it was introduced here from the middle east. This scene takes place in the central park of Brasov.
