Romanian heroine
Did you know? One of the key heroes of the film Children of Men is a Romanian woman. I was caught off guard when I started to recognize what she was saying (since she did not speak English in the movie).

Ieş, I did a quick search for Oana Pellea and her photo immediately reminded me of the actress from Balanta (and 15), but that turns out to be someone else altogether. Quirky; the women were born only a few months apart in Bucuresti, 1962.

a little off topic & old news, but…did you see Borat yet?….unbelievable…Maria and I are sitting in the theatre..the opening seen comes on…a couple of words , and Maria and I are looking at eachother in utter disbeleif..then looking around as if someone else might recognize the situation….now I’m still learning Romanian, but it took only a word or two to pick up on the fact they were filming in a gypsy villiage…Hillarious nonetheless….

I don’t usually like her, but I liked her in the film.

I saw her in a wonderful theater play this Christmas. She also took part in a small chat after the play. She seems really great. But everyone who saw her in Children of Men said that movie did not show her full potential. I would like to see it, even if it is just to see her.

Ron - Yes, I was blindsided by that, too. I was focused on Borat and didn’t pay much attention to the background chatter at first, but noted that the little village looked quite familiar. At some point, one of the ladies’ speaking became more prominent and I realized immediately Borat was being shot in Romania! Boy, did I laugh!
stingo - You know, you seem fairly well-studied in film… which means you’re gonna have to drop me a hint sometime as to one or two Romanian actors/actresses I need to check out.
Alina - I thought she did a marvelous job with the role she was given in Children of Men. It’s hard to show your full potential when you’re not the lead actress, but she certainly did her character justice.

Dear, I am not well-studied in film. The fact that I lived with a film critic for three years made its mark though.
I don’t particularly like any Romanian actors/actresses, but that’s because I have an aversion for the theatre (in general, not only Romanian).
Nevertheless, if I were to recommend Romanian actors and actresses, I would tell you to check out Maria Popistaşu, Dragoş Bucur, Tania Popa, Tora Vasilescu, Andi Vasluianu. (The Oana Pelleas and the Maia Morgensterns are too histrionic for my taste.)

I did figure that out pretty quickly! I saw Borat and Children of Men quite close together, and wasn’t impressed by the depiction of the gypsies in either. But Oana Pellea is great.

Oana Pellea- she is amazing in everything she does!
