Yes, sixteen years on, Romania is looking better and better with colors and all! (Americans wearing boring blue and gray clothes, and designing shopping malls and other plywood drywall crap, ornamented by gas stations, take note…).

When I got there in 1994, however, things were comparatively dingier (well, other than the Moldavian monasteries, which looked great…:-), given the economy at the time. My researcher friends told me that I should’ve seen Bucuresti in 1992 or even 1993.

But dammit, I have a bizarre soft spot for decaying beauty of buildings older than 1945. :-)

I’m quite sure, but that’s just my take from outside looking in. For all the trials and tribulations, I see a lot collectable happiness embroiled in the chaos unfolding. Of course, I’m not at the center of the black hole, but nonetheless…
