Campionatul Mondial de Bere, Romania 2006
Domnilor si doamnisoare, care bere e mai buna in Romania? O sa vedem noi.
The time has come to dispense with the plodding pace of rare reviews and dive head first into this important issue. In order to determine the relative ranking of the best beers in Romania, it is my distinct pleasure to announce that Romer!can presents the World Cup of Beer in Romania 2006.

At this point, beer groupings have been proposed and we are publishing this Request For Comments. Your participation during the initial phases is important. Romer!can needs your input regarding the selection of beers and their groupings. Efforts have been made to avoid having two beers from the same brewery in any one category. Likewise, efforts have been made to avoid having two dark beers in any one grouping. And so forth. Comments, Questions, and Suggestions wanted!
Secondly, please note that we need to immediately recruit sponsors in order to obtain some of the beers in the proposed groupings. Many of the beers are not readily available in Braşov, so we need sponsors who are willing to send one or more beers to Romer!can. Your sponsorship will be gratefully acknowledged on all general pages of the official Mondial Bere canon of literature as well as on all events surrounding the particular beer(s) you sponsor. Recognition will include both text links and graphical presentation for your brewery, pub, company, favorite charity, or blog. Finally, you will have done a Good Thing™ which may be rewarded in the afterlife in addition to my personal gratitude.
For more information about being a sponsor, please contact the Mondial Offcials right away. Mondial Bere will take place throughout the month of June and possibly into early July (a formal match schedule has been developed, but will not be published until all participants are verified).
Be advised: Sponsorship of beer(s) will not influence the competition in any way. Please sponsor in good faith so that your beer(s) may participate in this historic online event.
At this time, it is believed that most, if not all, matches will take place at a Braşov venue. However, this is not finalized and is therefore subject to change in the event other venues become viable. Should persons wish to personally participate as a junior referree during any of the matches at any venue, please contact the Mondial Officials directly.

What is the likelyhood that Romanian exiles will be able to get tickets to the games? When are they scheduled for?
I feel it’s my patriotic duty to come support my home team of Neumarkt as it takes apart it’s opponents in group L. I have had some contact with unnamed Neumarkt sources and they have expressed concern about the participation of beer such as Skol and Tuborg, which although bottled in Romania carry the distinct advantage of having been perfected in other versions of the world. They plan on submitting a former challenge soon.
The underground American World Cup of Beers was cut short when the generic “Import Beer” was picked as the winner despite it never entering the contest. PBR officials told organizers to “suck it” and returned to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to make further progress among hipsters and the alt.porn crowd.

[…] Severeal suprising pairings emerged at the official drawing of the group stage of one of the most anticipated competitions of the summer. “Campionatul Mondial de Bere Romania 2006″ (The World Beer Cup) is organized by Romerican with the blessing of consumer of horrid beer everywhere. (Owlspotting is a self-designated patron and booster–we were too cheap to opt for a sponsorship deal.) Details on dates and venues will be released in the near future, but until them you can feast your eyes on the groups. Experts consider Group H (with Silva, Skol and Aurora Bruna) to be the group of death and expect several other close contests including a showdown of giants when Tuborg Strong takes on Bergenbier for the crown in Group H. As Romer!can Mondial Bere officials were unable to finalize negotiations for American broadcast rights, our next best option was to not charge an entrance fee for any American spectator who has a valid passport, current driver’s license, or sufficiently attractive companion. All matches are slated for the months of Iunie and Iuli (and this announcement has now been updated to reflect that key data). A proposed schedule has already been drafted, but will is not expected to be officially released until all participating brewskis are confirmed.
Neumarkt is indeed verified as a participant in the upcoming rounds of (tentative) Group L. You may safely buy your t-shirts and foam fingers now. However, before you go to the expense of custom printing a “Bere X Sucks!” banner, please note that there could be a shuffling and/or a reduction in the composition and number of groups to better reflect actual availability.
Clearly, the Underground American World Cup of Beers suffered from a lack of central planning when it was hijacked by the unscrupulous Bozo D’Clown. Hopefully, future organizers will learn from this mishap and successfully conclude a contest where the obvious winner(s) will be from the unbelievably superior breweries in the general Seattle and Portland areas where one might make no progress whatsoever among the slackers and alt.weed crowd.

*Where’s that damn Crown Beer?* Oh man. I have one you must try. It’s so bad it actually tastes good ..after the third bottle.
May 22nd, 2006 at 9:50 pm
Crown beer? What’s this? The Due Diligence Investigatory Committee has overlooked something? I’ll file a report.
Hmmm, I know that group tried to be super thorough (to the point where it looks like one or two beers were included that may not actually exist any more), but yet our lawyers assured us this contingency might come up. Pray tell, who makes Crown?
Anyone able to volunteer to send this to Romer!can? One bottle, three, poşta, courier, whatever’s cheap. So, you’ll blow a couple euros; big deal. Just pack the bottle(s) nicely, so things arrive safely y’all.

The bottle says it’s made by Crown Beer Aiud — SC Ardealul SA. It’s hard to find out of that small town though. If I can get my paws again on one of those, I’ll mail you about it. Or maybe you’ll take a weekend trip over here?

Came back to leave this link on the commitee table

The ones with a cross before the name are , well, defunct. The hearted are up for trying.

Aham! The mythical SC Ardealul SC from supposedly from Aiud and supposedly making beer. I’d given up on them as being merely the stuff of legends. You say they exist, eh? Sounds promising!
Quite frankly, I believe the judges are looking forward to the opportunity to extend match venues beyond the glorious central hub of Braşov. However, any speculation at this point would be highly premature in light of scheduling complexities involving a number of committments (insert legal disclaimers and secretarial defense blather here). Together, we can hope for the best and look forward to some kind of effort in that direction. The greater Aiud area is being suggested? I’ve got a pushpin in the map now.
(Anyone interested in making Romer!can judges aware of interest in organizing a venue in your local village should contact the officials to
disrobe fromshed your anonymity, so that calculations can begin regarding logistics required for your specific GPS coordinates.)Mulţumesc frumos! I’ve forward that reconnaissance to the committee chairman. I’m sure it’ll lead to a major breakthrough in rectifying the past failures to decrypt the iconography of that wonderful data source.
Meanwhile, we’ll be thankful that there are so many crosses (now that we know what the heck they mean) and that the website appeared to not have been updated in a couple years, lest we end up in Group ZZZ and needing to dispose of one alcohol-sodden American corpse.

If you need any “beers” from Targu Mures (BereMures) I’d be glad to help out!
May 23rd, 2006 at 7:12 pm
It looks like Targu-Mures is building quite a contingent of both supporters (me) and potential sponsors (Matt). If the beer championship decides to become mobile, Targu Mures would be glad to host a playoff round sometime after July 16 in case the championship does run that long. By that time, I will be present to officiate any games and even provide great playing surfaces and/or accomodations to visiting teams.
May 23rd, 2006 at 8:28 pm
Matt - Thanks for stepping up the plate! The rest of these slackers can look up to you as the guiding light of what example they should follow in order to reach oneness with the community. I’ll have our Director of Promotional Affairs contact you via email regarding the specfics of your generous sponsorship.
Cristian - I suppose it’s quite feasible. Perhaps the committee might reconsider extending it’s tentative schedule (which has been withheld in lieu of more sponsorships like Matt’s) such that the Groupings battle it out during the month of June with the actual playoff tournament occuring in the month of July. That would necessarily extend the final championship match past that phoney FIFA sideshow and allow true Bere Mondial fans to focus their excitement on our humble proceedings.
Plus it makes things more flexible for our ocazie driver by giving him more time to plot his course for far off destinations like amazing Alba Iulia and teriffic Targu Mures or possibly even exotic locales like crazy Cluj or bitchin’ Bucuresti.
For the rest of you - How ’bout it? Can you sling a beer in this direction? Things are heating up and I don’t mean just my throat!
